SEEKING FREELANCE WORK | UX/UI & web design
I help startups with the UX/UI and web design of their products. This includes web apps, websites, landing pages, copywriting, and I can assist with frontend development where needed. My background of launching my own products and being a full stack developer helps me create practical designs that balance usability, aesthetics, development effort, and performance. I work to fixed price quotes for self-contained projects.
---
The best live example of my work is Checkbot (https://checkbot.io/), a browser extension that tests websites for SEO/speed/security problems. The entire project is my own work including coding the extension itself, UX/UI design, website design (the homepage is optimised to load in 0.7 seconds, 0.3MB data transferred), marketing, website copy, and website articles on web best practices.
[ Rated 4.9/5, 80K+ active users, 100s of paying subscribers ]

I have 10+ years of experience, including a PhD in software verification and 5+ years working for myself helping over 25 companies including Just Eat, Triumph Motorcycles and Fogbender (YC W22). See my website for testimonials, portfolio and more: https://seanw.org
Note: For large projects, my partner usually assists me in the background (I’m working on starting a design studio with her in the future)
---
Email sw@seanw.org with a short description of 1) your project 2) how you think I can help 3) the business outcome you’re looking for and 4) any deadlines. I can get back to you in one working day to arrange a call to discuss a quote and how we can work together!

I've been in product management / leadership for the last 10 years - I've spent the last 6 months exploring the AI coding space & AI in general. I'm currently the fractional CTO for a startup in the real estate space; I've got a number of my own projects I'm working on; and I'm very interested in and involved in the developer tools space - here's an example (https://vibescaffold.dev/) from a couple of months ago that was featured in the AI Tinkerers Community Spotlight.
Location: Kelowna area, BC, Canada
Remote: Yes
Willing to relocate: Nope
Technologies: Linux, Kubernetes, Helm, Docker, Terraform, SaltStack, PostgreSQL, Redis, MongoDB, Nginx, Python, Django, apt packaging, iptables, VPNs, TCP congestion control algorithms (more than I ever wanted to know)

I seek contract platform engineering projects. I can help early stage startups set up simple infrastructure and CICD so founders can focus on PMF, or help established software companies with old infrastructure adopt modern tools and practices.I'm also open to a full-time role at the right company.
I have 15 years of experience in startup software development and DevOps across web apps, cloud, and Linux networking. Six years of leadership in teams of up to 7 people. I have built infrastructure using Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Digital Ocean, and Linode.
Here are a sample of my accomplishments:
* Built a platform for hosting web apps using Kubernetes at a major cloud provider and taught engineers to operate and improve it. Introduced Terraform, Helm, and incident management processes. It operates in 4 regions and has about 250 total CPUs.
* Led a B2B SaaS company through their first SOC 2 Type II audit.
* Published and maintained the community Apt package for Helm, the Kubernetes package manager, which is downloaded more than 200,000 times per month.
* Created a system to control calls in Asterisk with AI-trained voice commands ("hey asterisk, dial extension 1") https://github.com/mattfox/asterisk-voice-control
I'm a data scientist with over 20 years of experience specializing in consulting and fractional leadership. I thrive on gnarly, avant-garde problems where standard off-the-shelf solutions fall short. My track record includes saving a German automaker from lemon law recalls and helping a major cloud vendor predict server failures to enable load shedding.
I've tackled a wide range of challenges across various industries, including oil reservoir and well engineering forecasting, automotive part failure prediction, and shipping piracy risk prediction to route ships away from danger. My technical work extends to realtime routing (CVRP-PD-TW) for on-demand delivery, legal entity and contract term extraction, and wound identification with tissue classification. I also work with the current wave of LLMs and agents, with a specific interest in applying them to effective executive functioning.
I've worked with the standard stacks you’d expect: Python, PyTorch, Spark/Ray, AWS, Postgres, etc. But I believe the solution must be driven by the problem, not the tools. I bring years of experience helping companies plan, prototype, and productionize sane data science solutions.
Please reach out if you have a difficult problem to solve. I do love stuff in physical meat-space.NB: Please do not contact me if you are working on ads, gambling, or "enshittification". I prefer to sleep at night.

You have a Web/Mobile app that's a mess? That needs some love and a responsible maintainer? Or need to migrate an old codebase to something more modern? A web app that's not responsive for a mobile screen and needs some optimizations?
Where other programmers find enjoyment in working with new shiny infra/frameworks/tech stacks I find enjoyment and purpose on maintaning stuff, taking care of software that powers current systems and serve real users. No matter how old the tech stack is, today more than ever it is crucial to make software reliable and stable. I maintained and migrated many systems over the years, doing it gradually over short or longer time periods depending on the task, with an eye to quality and with the help of tests.
I’m an experienced remote worker, based in the EU. I over communicate and willing to build trust. I’m a contractor and I already have some gigs, I’m currently available for ~20hrs/week at 35/40€/hr depending on the project.
A note on AI coding: I know how to best leverage these tools in assisting me BUT I’m the solely responsible for the code I push so you won’t get any slop or vide coded stuff from me. I know when to use these tools, when not and for what.
Location: India
Remote: Yes, can travel for sprints
Willing to relocate: Can live in the EU for extended periods
Technologies: Rust, Python, Typescript but focused only on agent enabled products, with multi-agent, multi-tool orchestration using supervisor or other patterns
