I use Kopia Backup software, sending all my important files to a compatible S3 bucket, using retention-mode: compliance as ransomware protection. I have access to every incremental snapshot Kopia makes using kopia-ui.

I was similarly upset and also dropped Carbonite over 15 years ago over something along these lines. Backup services should be agnostic about the data they back up for their customers.

Time to make the move over to linux and use Duplicati with Backblaze or any other bucket. You get the benefit of encrypted backups, have more control over what to back up, and will be notified upon failure.

Isn't it challenging to back up a directory that's being synced with a 3rd party service? Especially if more than one person may be working on one of those files in OneDrive or DropBox?

I would understand if they didn't backup anything with FILE_ATTRIBUTE_RECALL_ON_DATA_ACCESS set (on Windows). Everything else makes their product worthless.

Try recovery periodically, I lost ~90% of my files on Backblaze when I needed them.

They had a corrupted backup and no way to know it or to do anything about it.

I'm Backblaze user -- multiple machines, multiple accounts. I'm going to be dropping Backblaze over this change, that I'm only learning about from this thread.

Any suggestions for alternatives?

TIL that Backblaze has a desktop app. Seems this is specific to Windows and does not impact anyone using it as just a storage backend for backups through something like rclone.

I just want you to ensure you're not confusing B2 with the product being mentioned here. This is a custom Backblaze product which only works via their apps and I don't believe is available as a storage backend for backups through something like rclone.

I never tried this particular Backblaze product because I don't trust a opaque blob touching my most valuable data nor do I trust unlimited plans that dont mention what the limits are, atleast in fine print.

I've recently been looking for online backup providers and Backblaze came highly recommended to me - but I think after reading this article I'll look elsewhere because this kind of behavior seems like the first step on the path of enshittification.

i think at this point i have had enough of the majority of consumer products and just use production.

backup to real s3 storage.

llms on real api tokens.

search on real search api no adverts.

google account on workspace and gcp, no selling the data.

etc.

only way to stop corpos treating you like a doormat
