Location: Netherlands / GMT+2 Remote: Yes. Experienced with US / UK clients; open to timezone overlap.

Willing to relocate: No, occasional travel OK.

Technologies: Backend architecture, data-intensive product systems, event-driven systems, low-latency pipelines, analytics infrastructure, search/retrieval, Node.js/TypeScript, ClickHouse, DuckDB, PostgreSQL, Redis, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, Vue, Tailwind

Résumé/CV: Available upon request (or see LinkedIn)

Email: gbrits<at>gmail<dot>com

Hands-on principal engineer with 20+ years across backend systems, data-heavy products, search/retrieval, internal tools, and founder-led product work. Technical co-founder, CTO/CPO, architect, fractional technical lead, and engineering owner.

I work best where the business goal is clear but the technical shape still needs senior ownership: unclear requirements, fragmented tools and data, API boundaries, retrieval quality, and architecture that has to stay understandable as the product grows. I can own the technical architecture and system shape where needed, and I stay close enough to implementation to keep latency, operability, failure modes, and tradeoffs grounded in reality.

I work across the whole product system: internal tools, backend services, data/retrieval layers, API contracts, observability, and production behavior.

Selected work: - Fractional principal engineer / architect for ground-up KPI/analytics platform rewrite (5-person team); company later exited for ~€10M. - Technical founder / CTO / CPO for market-intelligence SaaS: live matching of 1M+ dynamic segments against continuous on-chain/off-chain streams; ClickHouse-backed pipelines processing billions of rows/day with near-real-time downstream availability. - Marketplace search/matching rewrite (Elasticsearch, percolator-style saved searches, high-volume notification infrastructure) while keeping the live platform in production.

Looking for freelance, contract, fractional CTO, principal engineer, or technical lead roles where one senior person needs to hold the whole system in their head.

Best fit: backend-heavy products, analytics/data infrastructure, complex internal tools, search/retrieval systems, or early-stage teams that need architecture + implementation depth without a large engineering org.

Senior backend and systems engineer with 8 years of experience, drawn to database development and fintech. I have a thing for impossible causes and genuinely enjoy the "the critical system is on fire and the team is gone" scenario. My experience ranges from .NET (F# and C#) to Clojure/Datomic on financial systems, where I integrated with a dozen APIs including Xero, NetSuite, Sage, Intuit QuickBooks, Plaid, and Teller; on the side I do OCaml and C++ on open source. Lately I'm very interested in database development, with deep knowledge of and a real appetite for database internals, especially relational and newSQL. I like making things reproducible and building tools that make our lives less miserable.

TL;DR: vast knowledge of the fintech ecosystem and database internals and management.

Like this Ask HN: Recommend employers with positive social impact [https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31518945], I am looking for similar work, but I am open to work on any interesting project. I am a European software developer who has lived and worked on four continents. It was time to move on and so I relocated to Africa.

I have more than a decade of experience running a company, doing software development, support and training and mentoring adults and students, as well as working on educational projects, and I am willing to take on a mixture of roles as needed to support a project.

I value good teamwork over fancy tech, and I don't shy away from working on legacy code. I am primarily motivated by solving problems, so let me help you solve yours.

I am open to work for a company anywhere as long as the work can be done fully remote from Africa.

While I could find a job elsewhere I believe that the experience living in an area where my work is going to have an impact gives me a better understanding of the needs of the location I am serving. Whether it is through direct contact with clients and users or just by being part of a local community and learning about the reality of living there.

In addition, I want to use some of my income to hire local interns and junior developers and train them in order to pass on my experience. I also sponsor children that otherwise can't afford to go to school (see my website). If you want to support this, I would love to work with you. Also if you are interested in hiring African developers yourself. I can help you build up a team for you.
