I find a lot tech people sensitive to that in general, given that what they are exchanging in the market is their presumed intelligence.
But again, you can keep me honest, instead of leaving me guessing about a banned word since 1998.
I was trying to explain a point that "sadness" as a by product arraignment not the domain. And I personally found the article heavy on generalization. When I read statements like "All knowledge work is pointless" and "Everyone in tech is sad".. I just think it's lousy thinking.
But I don't know what word you referring too that was not common since 1998 specifically and why..I find you comment to be really strange, sorry.
But anyway, I'm getting used to being flagged and downvoted on this site.
But it seems since 1998 it has been used for diagnosis and people are shunning the word, but that is mostly in western culture.
But I think it was clear from my post what I mean when I said this, I don't know why I'm defending words, I don't know the author, I'm merely expressing my dissatisfaction with the author's position and broad generalizations.
What would someone coming to tech think when they read articles like this?
If this is new information to you, then you should go look more into the subject and try to understand where I am coming from rather than simultaneously saying “English is not my first language so how could I know” and digging in your heels
But then you sat their reading a published article labeling an entire domain/knowledge workers as useless/sad and you took it, so that sits alright with you?
I don't know the person, I can see the work that produced and the cognition behind it, and in my mind it was lousy thinking dressed in uniform published and shared that could lead to damage, just imagine young people at university reading this..
And are you their lawyer? you took offence at the word because it is sensitive to you. Just like I took sadness personal to me. Again, I don't know the person, but I think their work was weak. Perhaps I didn't use the right adjectives but that was my point, it was a weak article and poorly reasoned, that stigmatized an entire domain.
I'm sorry to break your bubble but if you step out of this forum and the culture you are in, you will be offended every day.
You're not alone, there's just a weird culture in the West at the moment of signalling empathy without demonstrating it. Calling out the usage of a specific word is just an example of it that you've just experienced - don't put too much stock into these people's opinions, even if you get them to "approve" of you all it will take is a slight change in the direction of the wind and they'll burn you at the stake for something else.
Not to mention over time the meanings of these words shift and change because - and repeat after me - language is just an expression of internal thought processes. Eliminating and banning language does nothing to limit the thought processes: people will still want to express the feeling of something being "retarded" even if they cannot use the word "retarded" - eventually the new word being used will be considered "offensive" and the word will shift again but the meaning will stay the same.
Say what you want and stand behind it. Don't let these cry-bullies police your language.
You don't need to be an extrovert to be employed. I'm not, and neither are most of my coworkers. But you do need to not be a hyper-aggressive sack of negativity that emotionally drains everyone around you. So deal with that, and you might be able to land a job before you pass.
Thanks for having a clue.
EDIT: I would say more, but what's the point? If any honest feelings are expressed that in any way reflect negatively (perish the thought) on anyone here or their crock-of-shit pet theories, it will be flagged and censored with no recourse. Because God is the moderator of this forum, and His judgment is all knowing and perfect.
It's not possible to criticize these raging assholes or any of the daily doings of their fucked up, selfish, corrupt society, as they have outlawed all criticism of themselves. Only they are allowed to criticize others.
This place is a toxic shithole, and I can't wait to watch it burn.
Go ahead and flag this one too, fucking losers.
1. Got a director at Google fired for something he didn't even do.
2. Got an AI startup to shut down by convincing the CTO to divorce his wife, setting his entire stupid Danish life in turmoil, loving every second personally.
3. Murdered in cold blood my old manager while he was walking home from work and never got caught by SFPD, turns out they don't investigate shit.
4. Framed an investor as a pedo when I'm pretty sure he wasn't one, but the manufactured evidence pitched to his board made them feel so weird they parted ways anyway.
5. Incessantly bullied a VC's child at a local skatepark until he stopped going. I kinda felt bad about this one, but I kept telling myself to remember who his dad was.
I'll do more when the opportunity arises. These days though I'm very focused on the people, for example Eric Schmidt just bought a penthouse in Nob that I'm thinking about.
