My kind persona: Cool! We all need this!

My cynical persona: Now sit and wait for the advertisers to start infesting HN with recommended videos :(

My pragmatic persona: Sounds like there may be some law related issues such as

- "Then we wrap it up in a YouTube UI" -> probably violating copyright. I can't help but remember that episode from Silicon Valley, where Dinesh dumped the company to Galvin to get rid of the COPA violation

- "I had to create some kind of API key from Google Cloud UI to query YouTube for video metadata" -> probably in violation of some ToS already

It's so cool to browse youtube like this again, So many cool recommendations, a much needed project

haha I forgot I had hackertube opened in a tab, then when I saw it, I was like, wait, youtube recommendations are actually good? ... oh

It would be nice to have some context for each video, a summary of the comments that recommended it in the thumbnail tooltip?

I'm glad something like this now exists, I am tired of seeing the same "braindead" videos on YouTube that solely exist for views and likes. Even when I deliberately tell the algorithm, "I dislike this", it is stubborn and persists with these recommendations.
