tldr: they ARE regular european cranes, they just used to be larger and it is theorised that human influence asserted selective pressure towards a smaller form.

In cranes males are bigger than females.

The study has shown that the ancient bones as big as modern cranes were from ancient females which were as big as modern males, while the ancient bones much bigger than those of modern cranes were from the ancient males.

Without DNA analysis to determine the sex, it seemed like in the past there were both cranes of the modern size and other bigger cranes.
