I do think OpenAI's brand is dumpstered.

It will be interesting to see if this permeates out into the general public who already use ChatGPT or maybe it won't since it doesn't mention ChatGPT which is the stronger known brand rather then OpenAI.

More and more of the press is owned by oligarchs who are putting their thumbs on the scales, so that could be a factor.

It depends. Normies don't care, but a bunch of them are free tier users anyway. The people who care are disproportionately on the $200/month moneymaking plan; losing a bunch of them could hurt, especially if it snowballs the consensus that Claude Code is the serious choice for software engineering.

For one small data point, my Signal GC of software buddies had four people switch their subscriptions from Codex to Claude Max last night.

How many $200/month does the US government cover though? I'd say probably a lot. Especially with how much extra the DoD will pay to get OpenAI to cross it's "red lines" - on day two.

Yeah just wait until the next model comes out. People will be riding Sam’s dick again in no time.

I'm sure his sister will appreciate others lining up so he leaves her alone forever.

Yeah, myself I use ChatGPT, not OpenAI!

The way OpenAI and Anthropic are positioned in public discourse always reminded me of the Uber vs Lyft saga … Uber temporarily lost double digit marketshare in the US during a viral boycott over their perceived support of the Trump 1.0 admin. Heads did roll at the exec/founder level but eventually the company recovered.

unfortunately I think that's probably a good analogy

Among developers on HN, perhaps, but their goal is to soon replace developers altogether so from their perspective it's simple cost-benefit

Bye bye OpenAI

Let’s all remember that this is the guy who bought up the world’s RAM supply in wafer form (which OAI can’t use) to remove it from the market and drive up prices for competitors and you and I. He is the worst of the worst.

Quit referring to it as the department of war. It's the Department of Defense.

It's literally the Department of War https://x.com/DeptofWar

They are roleplaying. It's literally the Department of Defense.[0]

Exactly. People calling it the department of war just legitimizes an illegitimate and moronic name.

I don't believe this one bit. Altman and Trump have been in bed together since the inauguration.

I don't believe this one bit. Altman and Trump have been in bed for as long as his inauguration.
