Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2026)

Please state the location and include REMOTE for remote work, REMOTE (US) or similar if the country is restricted, and ONSITE when remote work is not an option.

Please only post if you personally are part of the hiring company—no recruiting firms or job boards. One post per company. If it isn't a household name, explain what your company does.

Please only post if you are actively filling a position and are committed to replying to applicants.

Commenters: please don't reply to job posts to complain about something. It's off topic here.

MeritFirst | Senior Software Engineer | Austin, TX (ONSITE) | Full-time

MeritFirst helps companies hire on demonstrated ability instead of pedigree. Candidates take realistic work-sample assessments, and employers get a signal they can trust more than a resume. We are backed by 8VC and Slow Ventures.

The hard part is building a signal good enough to influence real hiring decisions: fair to candidates, predictive for employers, explainable, and hard to game.

What you'll build:

- The product candidates use to prove what they can do

- The product employers use to find and hire them, and the scoring behind it

- The engineering bar the next hires will inherit, and helping us hire them

Stack: TypeScript, React, Next.js, Postgres.

We want people who have built and run real production software, debug from evidence, and do not need a fully specified roadmap. Early engineers, technical founders, and senior ICs do well here.

We use AI to move faster and to understand code better, but we do not blindly ship what it writes. You are expected to know and own every line you commit.

Such a cool (and needed) idea. Reminds me a bit of work tptacek et. al. did with starfighters.io to try to solve this in the security domain a while back.

IIRC they hit some challenges that may be relevant to what you're working on. I thought there was a postmortem somewhere, but can't find it just now - only this HN discussion (also looking for it): https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37985450

Thanks for what you are doing.

Thank you - really appreciate the kind feedback and you sharing this! I haven't heard about starfighters.io before so this is great to look into.

Google | Senior Staff Software Engineer, CodeAI | Munich, Germany | On-site

The role is to help set technical direction for how we build and use coding agents at Google: agent infrastructure, making Googlers more productive with agents, and making the agents themselves better.

We’re especially looking for someone who has actually built agentic systems and has experience using them to make software development materially faster in a large engineering organization. This is not primarily a “follow the space” role — we want someone who has shipped these systems, learned what works and what doesn’t, and can use that experience to shape the next generation.

The space is moving very quickly and is competitive both inside Google and externally. We’re looking for someone highly creative who wants to challenge how things are done today, has strong technical judgment, and can turn ideas into working systems with the team.

A big part of the role is not just setting direction, but getting there: prototyping, building, iterating, and inspiring the team to rethink what is possible.

If that sounds interesting, please apply:

Komodo Health | Principal Product Manager, AI Products | Full-Time | $213k-$288k + equity... | SF/NYC On-site / Remote US

Healthcare in the U.S. is a mess, and most of the data that could help is locked in places nobody can use. Komodo has mapped the patient journey across the country: diagnoses, treatments, providers, payers. Our customers are pharma companies, payers and health systems that want to act on that picture.

We're building the platform that puts it in their hands. There's an AI analyst that works across the whole map. There are apps that turn a population described in plain English into a full report in seconds, and tools that let analysts open, check and rerun the code behind every answer. Underneath all of it is a single query engine that every app and agent shares, so a new product is weeks of work instead of quarters.

Building has gotten cheap. Deciding what to build is the hard part now, and that's the job. We want product managers who:

  • Have shipped data, analytics or developer products that people use every day

  • Prototype things themselves with AI coding tools, and would rather show a working version than write a spec

  • Can sit with a customer, find the problem underneath the request, and say no to the rest

  • Write clearly and briefly
Healthcare experience helps, but it isn't required. Curiosity about how the system actually works is.
Small team, real customers, and more leverage per person than I've seen anywhere.

If that sounds like you, email our head of product at kaushal.parikh@komodohealth.com Or me at ramraj.velmurugan@komodohealth.com

Please include the keyword from my HN profile in the subject of the email!

Discord | Senior Software Engineer, Application Security | REMOTE (US West Coast) or San Francisco, CA | $196K-$245K base + equity

Discord is where communities and friend groups spend time together, on desktop, mobile, and now more and more inside games and third-party apps built on our platform. That surface area, plus a huge, engaged, occasionally adversarial user base, makes application security a genuinely hard and interesting problem here.

We are hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join the Application Security team. This is hands-on product engineering: building security features that protect user accounts, strengthening authentication and session security, and improving security-critical services. You will work directly with product teams to ship user-facing account security tools and address emerging threats.

Stack: Python primarily, some TypeScript/React, some Rust, occasional JavaScript. Runs on GCP.

Looking for: hands-on AppSec experience (not just compliance-flavored security), comfort reading and writing code across languages, experience shipping production software, and sound judgment on prioritizing real risk over checklist security. Experience with authentication, passkeys, MFA, or session management is especially relevant.

Location: Remote from the US West Coast. If you are in the Bay Area, our SF office is an option. Relocation to the Bay Area is not required.

Interview process: recruiter call, coding round, HM interview, virtual onsite, decision.

Cardog | Toronto, Ontario | ONSITE, HYBRID, REMOTE (role-dependent) | Full-time | https://cardog.app/careers

Cardog turns raw vehicle data into facts you can check: VIN decode, market price, recalls, and what the car's own modules report. Insurers, dealers, manufacturers and the public bodies that register vehicles all use it. We're a small team and every engineer owns a whole area.

Data - Data Platform Engineer (Remote). Own the datasets: government files, manufacturer filings, dealer listings, signals from the vehicle. Decide which source wins when two disagree, and be able to prove it. SQL first, entity resolution, tens of millions of rows. Postgres, TypeScript, Workers, R2. - VIN Decode Engineer (Remote). Own decode accuracy. Read manufacturer filings line by line, write the patterns, and test them against millions of real VINs. For people who are obsessive about correctness. TypeScript, Postgres.

Design - Design Engineer (Remote). Own the component library and the screens built on it. Dense data, and making uncertain or missing values look uncertain. You design in the browser and you merge it yourself. React, Next.js, Tailwind. - Founding Engineer, Dealer Platform (Toronto / Remote). First engineer on software for dealer groups. Time in stores, then ship it the same week. Strong Postgres, multi-tenant.

Business - Account Executive (Toronto / Remote). Enterprise and public-sector sales cycles measured in quarters. Run technical first calls alone and pull your own numbers in SQL. - Policy & Standards Lead (Ontario). Represent us in the consultations and standards bodies writing the rules for vehicle data. Closer to counsel than comms.

Field - Hardware Engineer, Vehicle Interface (Toronto). Own the diagnostic-port device: board, firmware, enclosure, from bench to a unit on a dealer lot. C or Rust, CAN at the frame level, UDS/ISO-TP against real cars. - Forward Deployed Engineer (Ontario). Take named accounts from the first meeting to a running system. TypeScript, SQL, and some time under dashboards.

Apply on the page (each role takes applications in place) or write to careers@cardog.app.
